I can’t say too much without giving away spoilers, but something I’m most proud of is how Thomas remains true to his word. I liked exploring the dichotomy of his confidence in his work, but his insecurity when it comes to personal relationships. He’s so intelligent and sharp when it comes to catching every last detail during a case, but matters of the heart show he’s all too human. This is a book about illusions and even the impressive Thomas Cresswell isn’t immune to deducing his way through everything. One of the things I loved was seeing his reaction to certain scenes. Since her choices aren’t neatly hidden away in a vacuum with no consequences, they have an effect on Thomas. Obviously she’s bound to make decisions which will test her and everything she thought she knew or wanted with this new freedom. For someone who’s constantly expressed a fear of cages, this was the perfect time and place to give her those proverbial wings. On this ship, far from the rules and restrictions of society, it was her turn to let go a little bit to figure out for herself once and for all what she wants out of life. In every volume before this either her father, or brother, (or uncle and Aunt Amelia to lesser degrees) had a say in how she should act, or what she should do. While Thomas is great, my goal for Escaping from Houdini was to give Audrey Rose more control over her choices. My editor suggested (aka REALLY wanted) them to kiss in book one, and thus he stepped from the friend zone into main love interest. His original role was fairly small, but he managed to steal every scene he was in. Temptation at Every Corner: A Love Interest Who You’ll Fall in Love With by Kerri Maniscalcoīelieve it or not, Thomas Cresswell started as a sassy Sherlockian side character in the first draft of STALKING JACK THE RIPPER. Audrey Rose and Thomas must piece together the gruesome investigation as even more passengers die before reaching their destination. The books in this series can be read without reading the earlier books, although some of the connections do make a lot more sense if you read the earlier books first.Įscaping from Houdini takes place on the luxurious ocean liner which soon becomes a floating prison where passengers are being murdered one by one…with nowhere to run from the killer.Īudrey Rose Wadsworth and Thomas Cresswell are on their way to New York, but the murders on their ocean journey across the Atlantic pose a new mystery for them to solve.Īs brutal slayings shock the ship and privileged young women disappear, the Moonlight Carnival–a troupe of performers providing entertainment for this journey–seem to be their primary suspect. You are in for a treat, because not only is there a giveaway for an ARC of Escaping from Houdini, but Kerri Maniscalco also wrote a fantastic guest post on Thomas Cresswell and how he’s developed throughout the series. Welcome to my stop on the blog tour for Kerri Maniscalco’s Escaping from Houdini, the third book in the Stalking Jack the Ripper Series! Module Level Gradle Build FilesĪn Android Studio application project is made up of one or more modules. In most situations it is not necessary to make any changes to this build file. in the individual module adle filesĪs it stands all the file does is declare that remote libraries are to be obtained using the jcenter repository and that builds are dependent on the Android plugin for Gradle. NOTE: Do not place your application dependencies here they belong The Top-level Gradle Build FileĪ completed Android Studio project contains everything needed to build an Android application and consists of modules, libraries, manifest files and Gradle build files.īy default, the contents of the top level Gradle build file read as follows: // Top-level build file where you can add configuration options common to all sub-projects/modules.Ĭlasspath ':gradle:1.3.0' The Gradle build files provide the ability to control whether or not ProGuard is run on your application when it is built. ProGuard is a tool included with Android Studio that optimizes, shrinks and obfuscates Java byte code to make it more efficient and harder to reverse engineer (the method by which the logic of an application can be identified by others through analysis of the compiled Java byte code). It is also possible to include the signing information entered through the Android Studio user interface within a Gradle build file so that signed APK files can be generated from the command-line. The chapter entitled Signing and Preparing an Android Application for Release covered the creation of a signed release APK file using the Android Studio environment. The following dependency declaration, for example, causes the Google Play Services library to be added to the project from the Google repository: compile ':play-services:+' If a remote dependency is declared in a Gradle build file using Maven syntax then the dependency will be downloaded automatically from the designated repository and included in the build process. Remote dependencies are handled for Android Studio projects using another project management tool named Maven. A remote dependency refers to an item that is present on a remote server (typically referred to as a repository). A local dependency references an item that is present on the local file system of the computer system on which the build is being performed. Gradle dependencies can be categorized as local or remote. Other examples of dependencies are libraries and JAR files on which the project depends in order to compile and run. This dependency can be declared in the Gradle build file for the first module so that the second module is included in the application build, or an error flagged in the event the second module cannot be found or built. The first module has, in effect, a dependency on the second module since the application will fail to build if the second module cannot be located and launched at runtime. Consider, for example, a module within an Android Studio project which triggers an intent to load another module in the project. The configuration rules to build a project are declared in Gradle build files and scripts based on the Groovy programming language.Īnother key area of Gradle functionality is that of dependencies. In the case of Android Studio, Gradle integration is provided through the appropriately named Android Studio Plug-in.Īlthough the Android Studio Plug-in allows Gradle tasks to be initiated and managed from within Android Studio, the Gradle command-line wrapper can still be used to build Android Studio based projects, including on systems on which Android Studio is not installed. The Gradle system is a self-contained, command-line based environment that can be integrated into other environments through the use of plug-ins. The strength of Gradle lies in the flexibility that it provides to the developer. This includes defining how a project is to be built, what dependencies need to be fulfilled for the project to build successfully and what the end result (or results) of the build process should be. Gradle is an automated build toolkit that allows the way in which projects are built to be configured and managed through a set of build configuration files. The different places you see in Zootopia are gorgeous to look at, and the 3D really helps you feel the environment. The film is bright and colorful but the 3D gives the film a lot more realness than you'll see in 3D. With Disney plot twists since Wreck-It-Ralph you sense that the villain of the film will be someone you would least expect so when you see it here, it's not at all surprising.ģD: Disney movies in 3D are not that special, but since Big Hero 6 they have been using it really effectively. The major problem that some may have is the plot twist. The set pieces are beautiful to look at and you really want to see more of it after the film ends. It's smooth there is no over the top animation where it goes full out cartoonish. The animation in the film is top notch where the characters flow as if they are in an actual society doing things regular people do. Some aspects of the movie is predictable where you know where the story goes, but like a lot of other Disney movies, its the adventure that matters. The movie is longer than most animated Disney films, but it doesn't even feel like it. Their onscreen bond is as strong as Channing Tatum and Jonah Hill in the 21 Jump Street films. The comedy and chemistry between the voices of Bateman and Goodwin are very strong that you genuinely feel for them when you see the struggles they go through. Besides that Zootopia also works on its buddy cop genre that we don't see with animated films. Yes a Disney film with talking animals reflects so much on our society and it's amazing how much depth they go with it. Yes we love Frozen, Big Hero 6, and Wreck-It Ralph, but surprisingly Zootopia is the most inspired idea that crosses into a relative theme that is problematic to the society we live in today. With every Disney animated film recently there is a sense of creativity and imagination that exceed all expectations and this is Disney's most triumphant film since Tarzan. For some reason I believe that Disney's Zootopia is their apology for Chicken Little, but as you watch this film you will get the sense of inspiration. REVIEW: I knew about Zootopia since it was announced at the D23 Expo in 2013 and was very curious how a Disney film centered on a world with animals will succeed when there are 1) a numerous amount of animated films centered on talking animals and 2) the failure of a film called Chicken Little released by Disney a decade ago. STORYLINE: In a city of anthropomorphic animals, a fugitive con artist fox and a rookie bunny cop must work together to uncover a conspiracy. So I snuck out of my house went to Times Square and went to see Zootopia and wow did this film blow me away. I won't give details on why I really needed to see this, but for whoever that personally knows me knows WHY I NEEDED TO SEE ZOOTOPIA. Why? Because these things are the core of 21st century skills. I think the Common Core literacy standards essentially boil down to this: we need to focus on increasing the quality and quantity of reading, writing, speaking, and argumentative thinking that our students do. Thankfully, the 80/20 rule is likely true of the CCSS there are a select few of those college and career readiness goals that will garner the lion's share of the long-term benefit for our kids. In actuality, if I were to seek to develop every single one of the Common Core skills for my 9th grade ELA and history students, I'd be trying to help my students master over 100 skills.Įven if you're not in a Common Core state, the same is likely true for your own literacy standards - 100+ goals.įorgive me for a lack of optimism here, but if the future of education in America depends on teachers being able to help students own and master 100+ literacy goals per year, I think we're in trouble. The Common Core are among the best lists of literacy standards we've yet seen in the USA, but there are still far too many of them: 32 college and career readiness anchor standards, with each of those standards containing several skills of its own. The 80/20 rule and the problem of Common Core implementation Let's take a look at two examples of how Teaching the Core, thus far, has sought to bring the Pareto Principle to bear on our issues. I think we have a wretched habit in education of over-complicating the most powerful 20% of educational practices. This is a crime we all commit together: teachers, administrators, literacy coaches, authors, consultants, you name it.Īt the risk of being labeled a reductionist, I've aggressively sought on this blog to boil our problems down to their roots and develop similarly boiled down solutions. So what does the 80/20 rule have to do with educators? In teacherspeak, the Pareto Principle would be written like this: 80% of student achievement results flow from 20% of the work we do with students. 80% of all stock market gains are realized by 20% of the investors and 20% of an individual portfolio.80% of company profits come from 20% of the products and customers.80% of the consequences flow from 20% of the causes. 80% of the outputs result from 20% of the inputs.Learning guru Tim Ferriss provides some other ways of phrasing the Pareto Principle in his intriguing book, The 4-Hour Work Week: It's named after an economist named Vilfredo Pareto, who observed over a hundred years ago that 80% of the wealth in Italy was held by 20% of the population, and (get this) that 80% of the peas in his garden were produced by 20% of the pea plants. The 80/20 rule, also known as the Pareto Principle, is essentially this: for many events, roughly 80% of the effects come from 20% of the causes. I think that all of us, if we train ourselves to focus in, can fairly quickly become adept at the 20% of things that yield 80% of the results. To be honest, I think few of us will get there, and if we do, it will be after about 30 years and 100,000 hours of intensive, deliberate practice.īut we don't need to wait until we have it all figured out before we can start being dang good teachers who make a huge impact with our careers. Teaching is this hugely complex, challenging calling, and that's why I'm glad it's mine - I don't foresee getting to a place where I'm like, “You know what? I've got this all figured out. Donovan, used under CC attribution license.) The peas will make sense in a minute.
